Spartan Race founder Joe Desena is on a mission: He wants to make obstacle course racing an Olympic sport.
Since launching Spartan Race in 2010, Desena his built it into the world’s biggest obstacle course racing circuit. Spartan Race will rake in close to $60 million in revenue this year, mostly from entry fees, and pay out almost $300,000 in prize money.
Obstacle racing is a rapidly growing industry and with sponsors like Reebok Spartan is leading the way. The Reebok Spartan Race was voted Outside Magazine’s Best Obstacle Race in 2012 and is the world’s leading obstacle race series and the first of its kind to have global rankings.
Spartan is not yet profitable, focusing on growth (its races will have between 650,000 and 750,000 participants by the time the 2113 season is tallied, . Last year, the private equity firm Raptor Consumer Partners, which is an investor in the NBA’s Boston Celtics and the Italian soccer team AS Roma, kicked in just under $10 million to become an owner of Spartan.
